The Omaha Dog Owner’s Guide
Where to let them run, who to call at 2 a.m., where to get the bath done without flooding your own bathroom, and the bar where your dog is the guest of honor. Plus the licensing rules and house-hunting questions nobody mentions until after you’ve moved.
“Do this the first week.”
Save the emergency vet’s number in your phone, then license your dog. Omaha gives new residents 30 days, and you’ll need the rabies certificate either way.
Hours, prices and policies change often. Call ahead. Last reviewed October 2026.
Nobody pays to be listed here, and I don’t get a referral fee, commission or anything else from any business in this guide. A pick is my personal opinion, nothing more. If your favorite groomer or vet is missing, tell me and I’ll add them.
Filter by area Showing all 54 entries across seven categories. Checked October 2026, but call ahead anyway.Where everything sits
The city’s fenced dog parks are mostly in central and north Omaha. Daycares, groomers and pet stores cluster along the west-side corridors. Pins are colored by section.

Omaha's fenced off-leash parks are free and mostly in central and north Omaha. Out west, you'll walk trails on a leash or drive in. Here's where to go and what to bring.
Most parks require a current license tag and rabies shot. Puppies under 4 months and dogs in heat should skip the off-leash areas.

WebsiteDirections ↗Rules, moving & house hunting
License your dog
- The Nebraska Humane Society handles licensing for Omaha, which includes Elkhorn. Apply online, by mail or in person at 8929 Fort St
- New residents have 30 days to license. Puppies need a license by 4 months old
- You’ll need the current rabies certificate, plus spay/neuter proof to get the lower altered rate
- Licenses renew every year and count as late after March 15
- Papillion, La Vista, Gretna and Bellevue each set their own rules. Check your city’s website
Omaha’s pet rules
- The limit is 3 dogs per household. A Pet Avocation permit raises it to 5 dogs, with no more than 8 pets total
- Rabies shots must stay current. The longest shot Omaha accepts lasts three years
- Some breeds have extra rules in Omaha: leash and muzzle off your property, a handler 19 or older, and liability insurance to license. Read NHS’s page if this could apply to your dog
- Leashes are required in city parks except inside fenced off-leash areas
Moving here with a dog
- Nebraska requires a health certificate (CVI) from a vet within 30 days of arrival, plus a current rabies shot for dogs over 3 months. Ask your current vet before you leave
- Bring paper or PDF records to your first vet visit here. It saves you paying to repeat vaccines
- Update the microchip with your new address and phone number the day you close
- Book daycare or boarding for moving day. An open front door and a scared dog is how dogs go missing
House hunting with a dog
- Fences: many newer subdivisions have HOA covenants that limit fence height, material and placement. I’ll pull the covenants before you write an offer
- Insurance: some homeowner’s policies ask about breed or bite history. Get a quote early
- Floors: ask about scratch-resistant flooring, a mudroom and somewhere to rinse muddy paws. Spring here is muddy
- Find out which dog park, trail and emergency vet are nearest a house before you fall for it
The year, for dogs
- Summer: pavement gets hot enough to burn paws, so walk early. Check the state’s toxic-algae alerts before letting them swim in a lake
- July 4th: fireworks run for days around the holiday. Plan ahead, and make sure their ID tag is on
- Winter: sidewalk salt hurts paws. Buy pet-safe ice melt, and rinse or bootie paws after walks
- Spring and fall: ticks along the trails and creeks. Stay current on prevention
Keep on the fridge
- ASPCA Animal Poison Control : 888-426-4435, open 24/7 (a fee may apply)

- Urgent Pet Care West : 402-991-9444
- Nebraska Humane Society , for lost or found pets: check their found-animals page first
- Your regular vet’s after-hours instructions
Service & assistance animals
- Under fair housing law, assistance animals are not pets
- Landlords and HOAs generally have to make reasonable accommodations, even where pets are restricted
- Pet deposits, breed limits and size limits usually don’t apply to them
- Questions about a specific situation? Ask me and I’ll point you to the right resource
Looking for a yard they’ll love?
Fenced yards, HOA fence rules, mudrooms, and how far it is to the nearest dog park. I'll check all of it before you write an offer.
